Meet the ACFW Virginia 2019 Faculty–Lori Altebaumer

ACFW Virginia is pleased to introduce faculty member, Lori Altebaumer.

Workshop Title

Seasoning Your Story with Setting and Description

About the Workshop

A novel without setting and description is like a play performed on an empty stage–in the dark. Setting and description are the spice that gives flavor to your story. But like any other tool, the writer must know how to use it, how much to use, and when. This workshop will guide the writer in answering these questions as they consider the needs of their story. We will discuss the functions and uses of setting and description, the need to use them with authenticity, and how to grow your skills in harvesting details to use in your story.

About Lori

Lori Altebaumer is a writer who only half-jokingly tells others she lives with one foot in a
parallel universe. Lori loves sharing the joys of living a Christ-centered life with others through
her writing. She is a wandering soul with a home-keeping heart and a love of words and story
Now that her nest is empty, Lori enjoys traveling with her husband and visiting her adult
children where she can rummage through their refrigerators and food pantries while complaining
there’s nothing good to eat here. While she works to complete her fiction novel (due out later this
year), Lori blogs regularly from her website at www.lorialtebaumer.com.

5 Fast Facts

  • I played the alto sax in the high school marching band, neither of which I did well. Apparently having a sense of rhythm is key.
  • I have a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Development from Texas A&M University, so I decided to be a writer.
  • I love peanut butter and sour cream sandwiches. My doctor is telling me, based on lab work, they don’t love me back.
  • I fell in love with books and story when my mother gave me the complete set of Little House on the Prairie books for my birthday one year.
  • I am involved in the Called to Change women’s prison ministry.  And there has never been a time when I went into the prison and didn’t come back out feeling more blessed than when I went in.
